CHAPTER TEN

Granger had been asleep when I arrived home from Fairy Cove. I’d climbed into bed beside him, careful not to wake him. The next time my eyes opened, he was gone, but he’d left a note on the bedside table.

Meet you outside Caffeinated Cauldron at nine.

I glanced at the clock. Eight thirty. I could make it if I hurried. I wanted to update him on my revelation, not that it changed anything. Nobody would believe me if I tried to explain that Ivy was a maniacal tiger on the outside but a kitten on the inside.

Granger and I arrived at the same time. He broke into a broad grin when he spotted me rushing to the door. That warm smile could melt the polar ice caps.

“Good morning, sunshine,” he said.

“Sorry I was out so late last night. I’ll tell you about it in a minute.”

He opened the door to the coffee shop, prompting us both to fall silent. The place was packed.

“Should we get ours to go?” Granger asked.

“I’m sure a table will open by the time we get our drinks.”

He strode up to the counter first. “I’d like a large coffee with a shot of true grit, and my beautiful bride would like a medium latte with one shot of hope and one shot of perseverance.” He turned to me. “That sound right to you, Rose?”

I smiled. “You know me too well.”

We collected our drinks at the end of the counter and were immediately offered seats by an elf couple that was leaving. There was a steady hum of chatter in the shop that didn’t involve the weather. The rain didn’t seem to bother residents as much as it had in the beginning. Unlike Aunt Hyacinth, they were adapting to the new normal.

Dakota Musgrove, the chef at the Lighthouse, stopped by our table with a to-go cup. “Sheriff, Ember, good to see you both.”

“Good to see you, too,” Granger said. “I hear business is booming over at your place.”

“It is. We assumed a lot of customers come for the view and thought the gloomy skies would hurt us.” She shrugged. “Apparently, they come for the food. Who knew?”

“It’s a great discovery to make,” Granger said.

“No complaints. Your big day is coming up soon, isn’t it?” the dryad asked, looking from him to me.

“Not soon enough for me,” Granger said.

“You should come by the Lighthouse soon and order the cracklewhip chowder. It’s my new recipe, and so far, it’s getting rave reviews.”

Granger smiled. “My stomach said yes before my mouth did.”

“Terrific. Catch you two later.” She gave the table a light tap and breezed out of the shop.

Another resident stopped by to ask Granger about a tree that had fallen in her neighbor’s yard, quickly followed by a fairy whose car was towed from the Balefire Beach parking lot.

Granger’s smile faded. “Sorry about that.”

“You’re the sheriff. They need you.”

Thaddeus Taylor, the centaur from the tourism board, was next to derail our attempt at a conversation. “Morning, Sheriff. Ember Rose, I haven’t seen you in ages.
